I grew up in a middle-class family in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. At 15, my cousin told me about software development to make money during a family crisis. I wrote my first line of code in 2017. In 2018, I started writing technical articles and speaking at meetups in University. By 2023, I'd travelled to 6+ countries (USA, Spain, Poland, etc) to speak at several conferences and worked on leading projects like Cilium (now part of Cisco). In 2025, I started posting everyday on LinkedIn, and since then, I have gotten multiple job offers, started my own company and generating $20k+ monthly reccurring revenue.
I'm telling you this not to impress you, but to show you what's possible.
Your Network is the closest thing to magic that exists.
With just your experience, and the internet, an experienced engineer almost anywhere in the world can build authority beyond their company. One where opportunities come to you, recruiters reach out first, conferences invite you to speak, and your career grows on your terms.
That was my dream.
But it gets even better than this if you stay consistent long enough.
Society has lost trust in the big corporations that once provided safe jobs and paychecks. Layoffs don’t discriminate based on talent. Promotions aren’t always given to the most competent engineer.
The promise of “just do good work and you’ll be fine” has quietly turned into dependency on internal politics, annual review cycles, and decisions you don’t control.
The new leverage isn’t just skill. It’s visibility. It’s reputation. It’s network.
I built career leverage because I understood something most engineers overlook: your expertise compounds faster when it’s visible. Over the past few years, I’ve turned technical depth into authority. Authority into relationships. Relationships into opportunities.
Not by quitting my job.
Not by becoming an influencer.
But by engineering my reputation intentionally.
